New Frosting on a Stale Cake

Gary Cooperberg
May 5, 2004

The referendum last Sunday was, truly, a miraculous event. As to be expected many Monday morning quarterbacks are
reinterpreting what happened in a futile attempt to nullify it. Tommy Lapid and Shimon Peres both cynically dismiss the
referendum as merely representing a tiny faction which should not have such a strong influence upon the entire Israeli
electorate.

Were this meant to be a national referendum this claim would be justified. The fact is that Ariel Sharon made a
unilateral decision which conflicted with the ideology of his own party. When pressed on the matter he decided to quash such
accusations by polling his party in the assumption that the majority would back him. Indeed, this was an internal Likud
matter. What is more, as it became evident that the referendum might not become the rubber stamp the Prime Minister expected
it to be, Sharon declared that he would consider the results to be a vote of confidence in him. This was his strongest
attempt to railroad his party into accepting a radical change in their ideology.

The members of Likud decisively expressed their opposition to Sharon’s plan, and, by the Prime Minister’s own
declaration, thus expressed no confidence in his leadership. Were Ariel Sharon an honest and honorable man, he would have no
option other than resign his post as chairman of the Likud party. Both the cake and the baker were rejected by the party.
Instead of honestly accepting the results of the referendum, the “baker”, while claiming to accept the results, not only has
failed to resign, but is trying to repackage the same “cake” that was rejected. It can be assumed that this time he will not
have the courage to allow his party to reject his plan the second time around.

Fraud and deceit are not qualities we seek in our leadership. Were Sharon to resign and join the Labor party and
then run again for Prime Minister, then we could truly discover what the people of Israel really want in an honest way. Had
the people of Israel wanted a Labor government they would have elected one. Sharon was overwhelmingly elected by the people
of Israel under the assumption that he would not dismantle any settlements, and that he would destroy our enemies decisively.
He betrayed his trust and deserves to be ousted. If he wants to please Bush and give away parts of our homeland to Arafat,
let him join the Labor party. For him to continue his efforts to decimate our country with the backing of Likud is akin to
treason.

Project Shofar will be bringing a message of hope to the USA between May 30 - June 10. Gary Cooperberg will be traveling throughout the country speaking to Jews and Christians who care about Israel. If you want to invite him to speak in your area, please send him an e-mail, gary@projectshofar.org and he will make every effort to include you on his schedule.

Project Shofar is dedicated to spreading these truths wherever it is possible to do so. It is sounding the alarm, to Jew and Gentile alike, to open our eyes to the G-dly process that is presently underway, and work to support it. We dare not stand idly on the sidelines.

If you want to support the concepts espoused by the Voice from Hebron, and the physical work of Project Shofar, you can donate online; or, send a tax deductible contribution to:
