It is time for All of Us to Act

Gary Cooperberg
June 9, 2004

Prime minister Sharon has stated that by the end of the year 2005 there will be no Jews living in the Gaza Strip. He may be Prime Minister, but he is no prophet. I think it is more likely that by the end of 2005 Jewish presence in the Gaza Strip will be even more firmly implanted than it is now. I also think it very likely that by the end of 2005 Mr. Sharon will no longer be our Prime Minister. Aside from the fact that he is spitting in the face of G-d by daring to unilaterally surrender to our enemies by abandoning Jewish Land on his own initiative, he has broken every promise he made to his constituents. He has committed a grave breach of confidence by trying to bulldoze steps which are diametrically opposed to the platform upon which he was elected.

I have been traveling all over the United States and know that both Jewish and Christian supporters of Israel are aghast at Sharon’s proposals. One needn’t be Jewish to see how self-destructive Sharon’s proposal is. People are truly concerned for the welfare of the Jewish State under this latest threat to our security created by our own Prime Minister!

Yet, if we stand back and look at recent history in this country we can see a clear pattern. Nearly every Prime Minister has attempted to surrender to Arafat and the PLO, albeit a partial and conditional surrender, only to miraculously fail at the last minute. The Land is not ours to give away. It is our obligation which can never be cast off. We can try, and we have tried to abrogate our obligations only to have them come back to haunt us. The only results of our futile attempts to “make peace” by giving away Jewish Land have been more terror and the needless loss of innocent Jewish lives.

Why can our leaders not see the absurdity of the very concept of land for peace when it is so easy to see who has almost all of the land. Even were we to hand over the entire Jewish State to our enemies, they wouldn’t even notice the difference as the size of our entire country is practically nothing compared to the size of the lands the Arabs control. So why would anyone imagine that peace will result from giving away any part of our homeland?

For any truly observant Jew to remain in a government which so much as contemplates giving away any land for any reason is to deny G-d and Jewish destiny. This too brings tragedy upon us. It is time to stop playing politics and begin to act like self respecting Jews. Clearly the chaos being projected by our government today is less than encouraging to those who care about Israel.

I am traveling all over the USA trying to tell Jews to make plans to come home. It is a hard enough job even were my government to be a self respecting one. But, as we have tried, time and time again to commit national suicide, only to “accidentally” fail, my own leaders have magnified the difficulty of my job infinitely. Yet, I am not discouraged. Zionism is not a political process, rather a Biblical one. Israel is most certainly not in danger of destruction, as she is under the protective wings of G-d Himself. Such cannot be said of any other country, including the great USA. Yes, we suffer terrible tragedy. . . but this too is of our own making because we have refused to accept our national responsibility to become a light unto the nations. We are not even a light unto ourselves! Yet, our refusal will not stand. If we refuse to accept our Divine destiny on our own, events will occur which will force us to do so even against our own will. This is true for Jews living in the Land of Israel, and also for Jews who have foolishly elected to remain in Exile in spite of the fact that G-d has returned control of our homeland to Jewish hands. . . as confused as they may be.

There is only one peace plan that will work. Jews living in Israel must ignore the very real threats placed before them by our own government and continue to live good Jewish lives as best we can. Jews living in Exile must immediately make plans for coming home. Only by so doing can we put an end to the terror and chaos which is growing both in Israel and outside. Time is growing short. Doing nothing won’t help. There are only two directions, forward and backward. Let all of us honestly look into the mirror and ask ourselves in which direction we are headed. Everyone can make a difference. Now is not the time to be apathetic. The future depends upon what we do.

Project Shofar is dedicated to spreading these truths wherever it is possible to do so. It is sounding the alarm, to Jew and Gentile alike, to open our eyes to the G-dly process that is presently underway, and work to support it. We dare not stand idly on the sidelines.
