Whose Help Do We Really Need?
Gary Cooperberg February 28, 2006
The State of Israel is a phenomenon which few Israelis, not to mention outsiders, understand. The ghetto mentality which imbued the Jew with a feeling that only by groveling before the gentile will he be able to exist has followed us even here. Indeed, for over two thousand years, we have been persecuted, exiled, beaten, raped and murdered in nearly every country in the world. We have been hated by world leaders in every generation. Yet, in spite of all of this, most of the nations who tried to destroy us no longer exist. And, even more incredible, not only do we continue to exist, we actually have returned to our ancient homeland and reestablished Jewish sovereignty here! There is no logic in the world that can explain such an unlikely phenomenon other than fulfilment of Biblical prophesy.
If we could but stop a minute and contemplate this reality we couldn’t help but see that the Jewish State did not come into existence as an act of charity on the part of world powers. It came into existence in spite of their wish that it wouldn’t. And if we look at the consistent efforts of our own leadership to grovel before our enemies and even try to grant them a new state on Jewish soil, we cannot help but realize that our very existence is truly an incredible miracle.
It is an embarrassment to me to see people who call themselves Christian Zionists clearly and openly recognize the miracle of the reborn Jewish State while I watch my Knesset and Supreme Court refuse to do so. G-d is here for all to see, but most prefer not to look. The redemption is already underway but most refuse to accept it. If you accept redemption then you must also recognize that there is a Creator and that we are obligated to serve Him. While some of our leaders may be willing to pay lip service to the concept of a Creator, most only do so because it is good for tourism.
I have been working with Christian Zionists for over ten years. I am ashamed to say that I am more comfortable speaking with them than I am with most Jews. G-d gave the Bible to the Jewish People. But most of the Jewish people would prefer to read the Wall Street Journal. The Christians with whom I work have picked up our Bible and read it carefully. They believe its message and can see its prophesies coming true. They come to Israel seeking to participate in the wondrous miracles being wrought today. Of course the Jewish government here is happy to enjoy the benefits of Christian tourism and generosity. Were it not for that it is not likely that they would ever speak of Israel as the Land of the Bible.
The fact that our government truly does not believe in G-d, nor in our Divine obligation to possess the Land is the true cause for the suffering we are made to endure. When our leaders go the United States and tell the President and Congress that we need their help, in effect they are denying our G-d. When they tell Christian groups who come here that we need their help, again, they are denying our G-d. Have you ever heard a prime minister of Israel, or any Member of Knesset stand up call out to G-d that we need His Help? That is our problem... our only problem.
Redemption is underway. Biblical destiny cannot be stopped or changed. If we would recognize it and work with it we can avoid needless suffering. If we choose to work against it or even just ignore it we invite tragedy. But even with the tragedy we cannot undo the destiny which lies before us. Like it or not we are the Chosen People of G-d who are destined to lead the entire world to recognize Him and serve Him as one.
It is hard to know how we can demonstrate our faith when our own leaders are demonstrating their lack of it. Hamas is not the problem. We are. This is the Land which G-d set aside for the Jewish people to live according to His Law. This will eventually happen. As terrorism, anti semitism and natural calamities grow throughout the entire world, Mankind will eventually realize that as technologically advanced as we may be, it is our Creator who has the last word. The Jewish people have already begun to be regathered to the Land of Israel. Those who willingly remain behind are defying G-d and their destiny. Now is the time to make plans to come home. And those nations who think that they need to pacify Arab oil interests by pressuring Israel will discover that they are bringing tragedy to themselves. There is only one nation in the world which is guaranteed to survive the redemption and that is the Jewish State. The USA has no such guarantee.
So, in truth, our leaders should not be asking others for help. They should be offering help to others. For it is only through the Jewish State and the Jewish People that blessing will come to all of the nations of the world.
