Demonstrating Our Faith
Gary Cooperberg
March 12, 2007
It is truly amazing to watch all of the different efforts being made by politicians and the media to "bridge differences"; fight terror and bring true peace to the Middle East and the world. The leadership in the Jewish State has adopted foreign ideology in its effort to enable our tiny country to survive, much less achieve peace with our enemies. All genuine moral standards were founded by our Torah. Other peoples have taken this standard and made alterations to suit their desires. Now the Jewish State, rather than stick with the original, has copied the flawed systems of other nations.
The Torah was given to the Jewish People to be our guideline to living a moral life, both individually and nationally. When we accept this concept and strive to fulfill those guidelines, we also set the example for all of the other nations of the world to elevate their lifestyles and bring genuine peace to our planet. But when we ignore or reject our destined Divine role, we bring chaos both to our own country and to the rest of the world.
When we seek to curry favor with the nations of the world by rejecting our own moral obligations, not only do we fail to accomplish our immediate goal, but we create deeper crises for ourselves. The G-d of creation chose the Jewish People to prove His existence to all of the nations of the world. In our modern world with all of its technological advances, Mankind has forgotten that it has a Creator. It has come to a point where it feels that it is on the verge of controlling this world. This is one of the reasons that G-d sends natural calamities, such as hurricanes and tsunamis. These events prove to us that we do not have so much control over our own environment. They should serve to humble us into recognizing our limitations and our need to accept the fact that there is a Creator to whom we must show our gratitude and seek to serve.
G-d chose the Jewish nation because our Father, Abraham, chose Him at a time when the entire world worshiped wood and stone. Although He Promised Abraham that his offspring will eventually be numerous as the sands of the sea and the stars in the sky, we find that the Jewish People seem to be an eternal minority, comprising only a tiny percentage of the world population. In addition, the homeland in which G-d commanded His chosen people to dwell, is the tiniest of nations whose natural resources are relatively insignificant.
How then does one explain that the entire world expresses such concern about this tiny minority of minorities living in such an tiny and insignificant homeland? We dont have vast quantities of oil or precious metals. In a world of air travel there is no need for a land bridge to link nations and provide trade routes. One would imagine it to be far more sensible to simply ignore this tiny country rather than to give it so much attention in our busy world.
The Torah tells us that the day will come when all of the great nations of the world will gather together to destroy Israel. While, logically, this makes little sense, we can already see events taking place which could well lead to this prediction being fulfilled. Iran has boldly stated its intention to wipe Israel off the map (as have many other nations in the past). To date no nation has made any serious effort to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons, which she continues to do.
The stage is being set for both nations and individuals to choose between their fear of Man and their fear of G-d. True faith in G-d has no meaning unless it is backed up with a willingness to sacrifice. When your eyes tell you that it is more prudent to stand with Israels enemies rather than with this tiny and very vulnerable country if you care about your own survival, this is where genuine faith in G-d is being tested. Can you find the inner strength to have your faith override what logic and your own eyes and ears tell you? Most cannot. Most nations and individuals will side with the majority even if they may sympathize with the pathetic victim. No doubt there were people in Nazi Germany who did not agree with the Nazi barbarities, but preferred to sit on the sidelines rather than confront evil and risk harm to themselves.
As redemption unfolds there are no sidelines. Either we stand with G-d, or we oppose Him. There are no other options. For the nations of the world this means going against the vast majority and standing with the tiny Jewish State. For this is the only way they will find true redemption and avoid destruction. And for the Jew it means coming home. To stay in Exile in a time when Jewish sovereignty has begun to be returned to our homeland because we think it is safer to do so is to deny G-dly miracles and to reject Jewish obligations. Coming home is one of the greatest demonstrations of faith for the Jew, and an act of sanctifying our G-d. Not to do so is just the opposite and will bring needless tragedy in its wake.
Project Shofar seeks to sound the alarm to all who will listen. It is a small voice in a sea of confusion with no logical hope to accomplish anything. Yet logic has no place in Jewish destiny. We must learn to stand up in spite of what logic tells us and just do the best we can.
