Who Needs Project Shofar?
Gary Cooperberg
September 7, 2007
Project Shofar is pursuing an ideal which has no logical chance to succeed. It proclaims a standard which few can accept as reasonable.
Given the situation in Israel today, how can anyone expect a Jew living a good life in the USA to even consider moving there? The fact is that the vast majority of Jewish Americans have never even visited Israel. To them America is their home. They might donate money to the Jewish State and even have a positive feeling about Israel, but to them it is still a foreign country, and a dangerous one at that. Beyond this there is a substantial number of Jewish Americans who are actually anti Israel.
Although they may not realize it, most anti Israel Jews in the USA have a deep ridden fear that any positive connection with the Jewish State may bring with it an antisemitic reaction from fellow Americans. For such people it is not enough to be complacent about Israel. It is vital that they prove to their neighbors that they are actually opposed to Israel. Thus they will support the PLO and condemn Israel every chance they get.
Given the reality of the situation why should I even bother to try to convince people to come home? Clearly the G-d of Israel doesn’t need my help. He can and will bring the Exiles home no matter what we do. The answer is really simple. When it comes to serving G-d we cannot take logic into consideration. We must not think in terms of the likelihood of achieving our goal, rather simply that we seek to serve our G-d. He Alone will determine whether or not our actions will bring tangible results.
Such is also the case with living in the Land of Israel. If we look around us and see our leaders making every mistake possible and virtually aiding our enemies in their aim to destroy us, why should we continue to live here? It makes no sense. Yet, if we truly realize that living in Israel is a Commandment, a Biblical obligation for every Jew in the world, not an effort to please our political leadership, then we realize that, no matter how impossible things may seem. . . no matter how apparent it may seem that this country has no future, that it is still our obligation to trust in G-d and to serve Him.
Every government of Israel, since the Six Day War, has tried to give away the miracles. The present one is no different. It defies logic that this country is still in existence given all the efforts our leaders have made to appease enemies bent upon our destruction. Yet, not only do we continue to exist, we have grown in quality and quantity. The only explanation for this is that our G-d is watching over us day and night, protecting us from friend and foe, and even from our own alleged leaders. This observable fact should be proof enough to all who are willing to look at it, that this country is a Biblical Process and does not fall into the realm of all of the other nations. We are a nation that stands alone, not to be reckoned among the nations of the world.
The process of Biblical Redemption is already beginning. Were we to open our eyes and work with it, we could hasten it and avoid so much needless tragedy. By pretending that we are like all of the other nations and trying to defy our Divine obligations, it is we who cause the process to be a painful one. It is for this reason that I try to reach out to my brothers in the USA with the plea to come home now. Only when we Jews stand up and show our faith in G-d will we end the needless tragedies we face today. And the best way to express our faith is simply by making plans to come home, and implementing those plans.
Project Shofar is dedicated to spreading these truths wherever it is possible to do so. It is sounding the alarm, to Jew and Gentile alike,to open our eyes to the G-dly process that is presently underway, and work to support it. We dare not stand idly on the sidelines.
