Of Declarations and Independence
Gary Cooperberg
May 13 , 2008
On July 4, 1776, the American Colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. A new kind of country was born whose ideology proclaimed that the people should govern themselves rather than be ruled by a monarch.
In May of 1948, the Jewish State of Israel declared its independence from Great Britain. But unlike the American experiment, the Jewish declaration was one of confusion. While, indeed, the fledgling state sought and succeeded in throwing off British rule in Palestine, it did not truly know what to do with its new gained freedom. Even back then one needn’t have been a genius to know that the Arab population was an enemy to the concept of a Jewish State. Of course the indigenous Arab population was afraid to fight openly as the Israelis were clearly strong enough to beat them. But to define this fear as loyalty to the Jewish State was simply dishonest. How can anyone be loyal to his enemy?
Looking to America as an example, not to mention their desire to curry favor with their most wealthy of benefactors, the leaders of the new Jewish State sought to build their new nation in the image of the United States. They thus declared dual goals which, to this day, they refuse to accept as diametrically opposed to one another. Israel is either the state of the Jewish People, or the state of its inhabitants, including Arabs. In spite of endless protestations to the contrary, it cannot be both.
The United States of America was created to be a new homeland for all freedom loving people. It is a nation of immigrants from countries all over the world who sought such freedom and self government. This noble concept was unique and admirable.
The tiny State of Israel could not possibly have served the same purpose as the United States. It was most definitely not intended as a haven for all freedom loving people. It was born out of the Holocaust to provide sanctuary for the Jewish People on a mundane level, and in fulfillment of Biblical prophesy. How can this state serve as sanctuary for Jews from all over the world when it insists upon making our enemies equal citizens?
I will be in the United States on July 4th this year. I am looking to spend that Shabbat in a Jewish community where I can speak to as many Jewish audiences as possible, from Friday through Sunday. If you are in a position to arrange such speaking engagements in your community please contact me as soon as possible. America has always been an outstanding host country to Jews. We owe her a debt of gratitude. But we also have an obligation to recognize that we are living in an age that our forbears could only dream about. G-d has enabled us to return to Zion. To have this tremendous privilege and to ignore it is a grave sin.
Gary Cooperberg will be speaking in the USA between June 29 and July 9.
If you wish to invite him to speak in your area please send him an email, gary@projectshofar.org. His time is extremely limited and his schedule will fill up quickly. So don't wait until it is too late.
Project Shofar is dedicated to spreading these truths wherever it is possible to do so. It is sounding the alarm, to Jew and Gentile alike, to open our eyes to the G-dly process that is presently underway, and work to support it. We dare not stand idly on the sidelines.
