Unilateral Victory Is Better Than Unilateral Surrender
Gary Cooperberg April 19, 2004
Once again, Ariel Sharon has proved his expertise in political maneuvering. He has gained support for his sellout of the Gaza Strip from the major ministers in his party who were formerly unwilling to support it. It is not completely clear how this magic was accomplished. Certainly most ministers would prefer to keep their jobs. Sharon seems to have convinced them that he is still a powerful military leader, as evidenced by the recent elimination of top Hamas leaders. He also has created the impression that, by selling out his fellow citizens living in the Gaza Strip, he is really protecting those living in Judea and Samaria.
We Jews, more than any other people, should know better than to think we can perform a mitzvah by committing a sin. Just because the Gaza Strip is infested with murderous terrorists is no reason for us to abandon it. On the contrary. It is our obligation to obliterate the terrorists and restore glory to all of our homeland. To do less is to admit that the terrorists are stronger than Jewish forces. If this were true, then certainly retreat is understandable. But it isn't true! We are mightier than our enemies and it is they who should be retreating, not us.
I know, Sharon and Bush were smiling and winking at one another like two schoolboys who just pulled off a prank. Sharon is probably boasting to his ministers how he convinced the American president not to push to dismantle any more settlements. This may even be true. But even if Bush did indicate his support for Sharon's plan, that is no guarantee for anything. Immediately following Bush's double-talk about how times and situations have changed the facts on the ground, Colin Powell was explaining to the PLO that American policy defining settlements as illegal is still in force. So we have lots of confusing talk, and a prime minister who stands prepared to throw Jews out of their homes to save Israel!
Mr. Prime Minister, you may be a brilliant politician, but your present strategy is faulty. You could have saved a fortune in munitions and accomplished a far more significant victory over our enemies had you employed missiles upon the mourners for Yassin and Rantissi. You could have justifiably routed our enemies and rebuilt Gaza as a true part of the Jewish homeland. Instead you have only angered the murderers and increased their incentive to murder Jews. Now you are even preparing to give them a stronger base from which to launch their murderous attacks. I was told by Jewish soldiers serving in Gaza, that this area is so infested with explosives that you could literally throw a match and blow up the whole place! Why are you placing our lives in danger? You admit we have no peace partner. You want to be unilateral? Why not unilaterally destroy our enemies and liberate our homeland? Unilateral surrender will only bring more terror.
